This article, found on the New York Times website, touches
on a subject I feel is rarely dabbled in by today's journalists and writers.
The article explores the culture of sport shooting among the people of Switzerland. An important thing
to understand is that Switzerland has a gun ownership rate only topped by that
of the United States and Yemen. Maybe the prominence of sport shooting has
heightened this whole idea of gun literacy (knowing how to use a gun, what responsibilities come with it, etc.) among Swiss people which in turn
made Switzerland a bearer of a super low gun violence rate.
As many of you may know, I am part of the Creighton Prep trapshooting team. Some people are scared off by the idea of a trap range filled with 12-17 year olds waving around guns, but one thing I can affirm is that safety is the #1 priority on these ranges. The high school shooters on these ranges are among the more well versed when it comes to firearms, what they really are, and how to be safe with them. Perhaps a future of sport shooting will lead to a safer and more gun-literate society!!!

ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly. Also, awhile back, I read about the gun ban in Australia and how it has been quite ineffective. Plus my cousin, who works as an architect in Perth, told me about how he hears about incidents where people just use axes in place of guns to rob banks.
